Cameron Norrie received a hostile response from the Paris Masters crowd after celebrating animatedly during his third-round match against local favourite Valentin Vacherot. Vacherot, born in Southeastern France but representing Monaco internationally, had all the support and sent the Brit packing after a straight-sets win.

Norrie was public enemy No. 1 on Thursday and received huge boos during one moment in the first set. After winning a point in the 11th game with the Brit trailing 5-6, Norris twice lifted both arms in the air to celebrate, but was met with intense boos from the spectators. In the heated atmosphere, Vacherot emerged victorious from their tightly fought match, winning 7-6, 6-4.

With no French players remaining in the ATP Masters 1000 event, Vacherot is the closest thing to a home player left in the singles draw.

He had previously knocked out his cousin Arthur Rinderknech, one of three French players who received wildcards for the tournament.

Another wildcard recipient, Terence Atmane, was defeated by Aleksandar Vukic in the first round. Meanwhile, Arthur Cazaux made it to the second round after beating Luciano Darderi in straight sets, only to be swiftly dispatched by the 15th seed, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Vacherot earned his wildcard spot in Paris following his victory at the Shanghai Masters, where he triumphed over Rinderknech in the final. He had been ranked world No. 204 before his sudden purple patch.

After defeating Norrie, he said: "I've been training, trying, working, doing everything possible and everything is clicking now. It's the work of many, many, many years even since my five years in college, my four years on tour, it's pure work.

"I would have never thought that it would pay off this way but I'm glad it is."

Last year's finalist and French number one, Ugo Humbert, was set to compete but had to pull out due to an injury. Arthur Fils also withdrew from the tournament, having previously pulled out of the US Open last month.

A French player has not clinched the Paris Masters title since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008. He also reached the final in 2011, losing to Roger Federer. In the intervening years, Gael Monfils failed to secure the title, first losing to Novak Djokovic and then Robin Soderling.

Norrie was the last Brit standing after Jacob Fearnley, who made it through qualifying, lost in straight sets to Andrey Rublev in the first round.

British number one Jack Draper was unable to compete due to an arm injury. Norrie would've fancied his chances of going further in this tournament after his valiant win over Carlos Alcaraz earlier this week.

However, he was no match for the red-hot Vacherot and may now choose to end his season. The Moselle Open and Vanda Pharmaceuticals Hellenic Championship - which Novak Djokovic is due to play in - are options for Norrie's next tournament.
