Le Hoang Loi, 34, who has an unexpunged theft record, has been charged for breaking into a home in Dong Thap Province and stealing two jackfruits worth VND387,000 (US$15).

On Oct. 23 Loi drove a motorbike from his home in My Thien Commune to My Duc Tay, sneaked into a household garden and stole the jackfruits.

He was spotted by the homeowner, and after his pleas for forgiveness were rejected, and abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene.

He was later summoned to the police station after the owner reported him. He admitted to his theft, saying he needed money for personal expenses.

Anyone who steals can face criminal charges even if the value of the stolen property is under VND2 million ($76) if they have a prior theft conviction that has not been expunged from their record. In this case, Loi faces prosecution and could receive a jail sentence or other penalties according to the criminal code.
