A feature is soon coming for mobile users which will completely change the experience of receiving calls. Now on calls coming from an unknown number, not only the number but also the full name of the person calling will be visible on the screen. This new service is being launched on the initiative of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which aims to make caller identification transparent and curb phone frauds.

Government initiative will change mobile call experience

According to sources, the Department of Telecommunications is busy in final preparations for this service in collaboration with TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). This service will be started under the name of “Caller Name Presentation (CNAP)”. Currently, it is being implemented on a trial basis with the country’s major telecom companies – Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea and BSNL.

How will the new Caller ID service work?

After the launch of this facility, whenever a call is received on any mobile, the name of the person registered with that number will automatically be displayed on the screen. This information will be obtained from KYC (Know Your Customer) details to the mobile number. That is, the name with which the number is registered with the telecom company will be visible on the phone of the call recipient.

TRAI says that this step will help in protecting mobile users from spam calls, fraud and fake calls. Often people get calls from unknown numbers, which lead to incidents of cyber fraud or leakage of personal information. After the implementation of CNAP, such cases are expected to reduce significantly.

Attention will also be paid to users’ privacy

The government says that in this service all matters to privacy will be taken full care of. Only that information will be shown on the screen which has been officially entered by the user for his mobile number. No one’s personal information or address will be shared.

True Caller may get competition

It is believed that this new system will give tough competition to app-based Caller ID services like Truecaller. Until now, services like True Caller relied on third-party databases, which often resulted in incorrect names or incomplete information. But under CNAP the information will come directly from the database of telecom companies, which will increase accuracy.

When will the service be implemented?

According to officials, pilot testing of CNAP will be completed in the next few months and it will be launched for all users in a phased manner. Initially this service will be voluntary, but in future it can be implemented by default on all mobile networks.

curiosity among people

Mobile users are excited about this new system. They believe that this will bring transparency in knowing “who is calling” and reduce the incidents of fraud. According to experts, this step can prove to be a major change for India in the direction of “digital safety”.
