New Delhi: Team India made history on Sunday night when under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur the Indian womens cricket team won their first-ever ICC Womens ODI World Cup title in Navi Mumbai. In the final against South Africa India batted first and posted a massive score of 298/7 in 50 overs. Shafali Verma played a brilliant innings of 87 runs and then also took two wickets with the ball. She was chosen as the Player of the Match for her all-round performance. But another name that caught everyones attention in this victory was Amanjot Kaur who laid the foundation for Indias win by taking the crucial catch of Laura Wolvaardt.
Family Crisis But Daughter Was Unknown
After Team Indias victory Amanjots father Bhupinder Singh made an emotional revelation. He revealed that his mother (Amanjots grandmother) Bhagwanti Devi had suffered a heart attack during the tournament. But the family decided to keep this news from Amanjot so that she could fully concentrate on the tournament.
Bhupinder Singh told The Indian Express
“My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjots strength. When I was at my carpentry shop she would sit outside the house or in the park in Phase-5 Mohali and watch Amanjot play cricket. Amanjot wouldnt have reached this far without her.”
Family Juggling Between Hospital and World Cup
Bhupinder said that his family had been struggling between the hospital and home for the past few weeks.
He said
“My mother suffered a heart attack last month. We didnt tell Amanjot about it so that her focus wouldnt be diverted from the game. Now Indias victory has brought relief to our family. This happiness is like a balm for us.”
Amanjots Catch Becomes the Turning Point of the Match
In the final when South African captain Laura Wolvaardt was wreaking havoc with 101 runs Amanjot took an incredible catch to dismiss her. This moment proved to be the turning point of the match for India. Amanjot said after the match
“We all knew how crucial that catch was. Its the most memorable moment of my life. India has made history this is just the beginning now Indian womens cricket will go to the next level.”
