Vande Bharat Sleeper: The journey of the country's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train has stalled even before it begins. The train, which was scheduled to run on the tracks in October 2025, is now facing questions about its launch. Numerous flaws have emerged, from furnishings to safety. Due to sharp corners and design flaws, the Railway Ministry has ordered improvements, but approval is still pending. Will this train be able to provide passengers with a comfortable sleeper journey on schedule, or will the wait be even longer? The answer lies in the Railway Ministry's next move.

Vande Bharat Sleeper: The wait for the country's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train has now gotten longer. Scheduled to launch in October 2025, the train will no longer run on schedule. The Railway Board has pointed out deficiencies related to the train's interior, design, and safety, which need to be addressed. Due to this, the launch has been postponed.

Why have preparations for the launch been halted?

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had previously stated that the train would begin service in October 2025. However, a Railway Board inspection has revealed several furnishing and workmanship issues. The second rake of the train is currently in the final production stage, and work on its interior is ongoing.

What defects were raised as concerns?

The Railway Board's report stated that sharp corners in the train's berth area, incorrectly designed curtain handles, and "pigeon pockets" between the berth connectors are issues that could impact cleanliness and passenger safety. The Board has ordered that these deficiencies be immediately rectified and the improvements implemented in all upcoming new rakes.

Will safety features be updated?

The Railway Ministry has clarified that the train's fire safety system, Kavach 4.0 (anti-collision technology), and improved communication systems are being improved.

Additionally, loco pilots are being trained to be able to uncouple a train coach within 15 minutes in an emergency. The Railways has mandated that the necessary tools for this be included in every driver and guard's kit.

What considerations are being made for passenger convenience?

The Ministry has instructed all zones to ensure trained technical staff are present on every route to provide immediate assistance in case of any technical malfunction or emergency. Furthermore, all systems will be thoroughly inspected before train operations to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for passengers. Announcements will also be made in three languages (Hindi, English, and regional languages) to ensure passengers' easy understanding of safety rules.

When will the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train run?

At present, there will be a slight delay in the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train, but this delay is being made keeping in mind the safety and comfort of passengers. Additionally, the train's route has not yet been finalized, and the Railway Ministry is awaiting final approval from the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS). Once approval is received, the train's launch date will be announced. This means the wait may be slightly longer, but when the train finally runs, travel will be even more comfortable and safe.
