How to consume coffee properly

Morning coffee is an important part of starting the day for many people. But do you know that drinking it in the wrong way can have a negative impact on your health? Dr. Trisha Pasricha, a doctor-scientist from Harvard University, has recently shared a post on this topic on social media.

In this post, he has told about some small changes by which you can make your daily coffee more healthy. He has given seven scientifically proven suggestions by which coffee can be beneficial for your health.

Just put one teaspoon of sugar in a cup

Referring to an important study conducted in 2022, Dr. Trisha said that people who consume coffee without sugar live longer than other people. However, he also pointed out that people who add a teaspoon of sugar can also get health benefits. Therefore, excessive amount of sugar in coffee should be avoided, while light sweetness can be considered safe.

Avoid artificial sweeteners

He warned that artificial sweeteners are not beneficial for health. Another 2022 study found that these sweeteners reduce the benefits of coffee. Dr. Trisha said that sugar substitutes are not suitable for everyone and may have side effects in the long run.

Don’t use processed coffee creamer

Dr. Trisha told that many coffee creamers available in the market are actually made from vegetable oils, the main ones being palm or soybean oil. These also contain added sugar. He advised that if you want flavored coffee, use natural alternatives like cinnamon or chocolate powder instead of cream.

Limit French Press Coffee

Dr. Trisha said that excessive consumption of French press or espresso coffee can increase cholesterol. The reason for this is an element called diterpene, which reduces the liver’s ability to remove cholesterol. He told that this problem can be prevented to a great extent by using paper filters.

Better to drink coffee before noon

Citing a 2025 study, he said that people who drank coffee before noon during the day had a 16% lower risk of death from all causes. Consuming caffeine late at night reduces the melatonin hormone, which affects sleep and the biological rhythm of the body. Therefore, it is more beneficial to drink coffee in the morning or afternoon.

Relationship between coffee and digestion

Dr. Trisha said that coffee activates the gastrocolic reflex in the body, due to which some people feel the need to defecate immediately after drinking coffee. He said that this is a completely normal process and is considered a healthy reaction of the body. Therefore, schedule your daily routine accordingly.
