A New Chapter in NYC Politics
New York: The newly elected Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, proclaimed that his recent victory signifies the end of a 'political dynasty.' He referenced former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, stating that with this win, the city has transitioned 'from the old into the new.'
Mamdani made history by winning the highly scrutinized New York City mayoral race, where he triumphed over notable figures such as former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
In his victory address on Tuesday night, as the results confirmed his win in the 2025 elections, Mamdani expressed gratitude to his supporters, saying, 'Friends, we have dismantled a political dynasty. I wish Andrew Cuomo well in his future endeavors, but let this be the last time I mention his name as we move away from a political system that serves only a select few. New York, you have spoken tonight.'
'Our success stems from New Yorkers believing that the impossible could become reality, and we achieved this because we demanded that politics be a process we engage in, not something done to us,' he added.
'As I stand here, I recall Nehru's words – there are rare moments in history when we transition from the old to the new, when an era concludes, and when the spirit of a long-silenced nation finds its voice. Tonight, we have indeed moved from the old into the new.'
