Winter means cozy sweaters and hot chocolate, with chilly breezes-but, alas, it also brings along one of the most common beauty concerns: dry and dull lips. As the temperature drops, the air loses its moisture, and that leaves our lips cracked, flaky, and lifeless. Since lips don't have oil glands, they become more dehydrated in cold winds and even indoor heating. Constant lip licking, not keeping them hydrated, further deteriorates the problem. But don't worry-with the right care, ingredients, and habits, you can surely restore softness and shine to your lips throughout this winter season.

1. Exfoliate away the flakesExfoliation marks the beginning of how to achieve smoother lips. Exfoliate lightly with a honey-and-sugar lip scrub, or with an extra-soft toothbrush, to remove dead skin cells. This will not only bring about smoother lips but help a great deal in product absorption. Do not over-exfoliate; doing it twice a week should suffice and thus not lead to irritation or any sensitivity.

2. Deep moisturization is key
In fact, it is recommended to use moisturizing lip balms that contain natural emollients like shea butter, coconut oil, or cocoa butter. Vitamin E and beeswax also help seal in moisture to heal fissures. Application of lip balm several times a day, especially before going to bed for overnight nourishment, is recommended.

3. Stay hydrated from within
One needs to drink plenty of water even in winter. Drink ample water or herbal teas to keep your body and lips hydrated. Dehydration often reflects first on your lips.

4. Protection against extreme weather conditions
Apply a lip balm with SPF before going outdoors in cold winds and UV rays. Cover your lips with a scarf to prevent chapping.

5. Avoid bad habits
Also, licking, peeling, or nibbling on your lips is to be avoided, as it encourages further drying out and prolongs the recovery process.

Regular exfoliation, deep hydration, and protection will keep them soft, healthy, and radiant during the winter. And a little care goes a long way to maintain that perfect winter smile.
