Hong Kong’s TVB actor Gabriel Harrison went live online to reveal his family’s severe financial distress and appeal for help covering his wife’s liver transplant expenses.
In a livestream on Sunday afternoon, he said his wife was in critical condition due to acute cirrhosis and was expected to undergo surgery at Zhongshan Hospital in Guangzhou Province, according to Hong Kong-based news outlet HK01.
He said her medical bill is estimated at 700,000 yuan (US$98,000). He asked viewers for help and said time was running out for his family.
He also stated the exact time in the livestream and confirmed his identity to reassure viewers, online news site Dimsum Daily said.
After the livestream, the founder of his management company, Sky Team Entertainment, and several friends transferred him 500,000 Hong Kong dollars.
Harrison and his wife have been married for eight years. In interviews, he said he met her during a difficult time in his career and that her support helped him rebuild his life. She works as a makeup artist for entertainers. The couple now lives and works in mainland China.
Harrison entered the entertainment industry after winning TVB’s 1994 New Talent Singing Awards. He signed with a record label and released his debut song in the same year.
He later appeared in some productions made by TV station TVB. He also acted for broadcasting company ATV but they drew limited attention, and his career became unstable.
In 2008, after leaving ATV, he moved to mainland China and sang at lounges and night venues four to five times a week. He later developed vocal cord inflammation that caused temporary voice loss, which affected his work and income.
