Importance of Children’s Day

New Delhi: Every year on 14 November, Children’s Day is celebrated with great pomp in India. This day is especially dedicated to children. Various programs, games and competitions are organized on this occasion in schools, in which children participate enthusiastically. But have you ever wondered why Children’s Day is celebrated every year on 14 November? There is an important reason and emotional story behind this.

Why is Children’s Day special?

In fact, November 14 is the birthday of India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Pandit Nehru had deep love for children. He believed that children are the future of any nation, and if their childhood is strong and educated, the country will also progress. Therefore, he always laid emphasis on the development and education of children. Because of his affection towards children, children fondly called him ‘Chacha Nehru’.

purpose of children’s day

Nehru ji always took out time to meet children, no matter how busy he was. It is said that he always had toffees or small gifts for children in his pocket. After his demise, it was decided to celebrate his birthday as ‘Children’s Day’ in memory of his love for children.

international children’s day

International Children’s Day is celebrated every year on 20 November across the world. The United Nations recognized this day as Universal Children’s Day in 1954, to raise awareness of the rights and welfare of children. In India also, child rights are discussed on this day, but the main festival is celebrated on 14th November only, so that the respect towards Chacha Nehru and his ideas can be remembered.

Special events and awareness

Children’s Day is not just a day of fun and holiday, but its real purpose is to raise awareness about the rights, education and safety of children. On this day, special programs are organized for children, so that their talent can shine and their self-confidence increases. Also, this day reminds the society that every child has the right to education, nutrition, safety and love. Thus, Children’s Day teaches us that the future of the country will be bright only when every child is happy, healthy and educated – just like Chacha Nehru’s dream.
