If your smartphone’s battery drains within a few hours, it’s not just the old phone that’s causing it, but also some “hungry” apps that constantly consume energy in the background. Now Google has decided to crack down on them. The company has announced that in the upcoming updates, it will implement strict rules on such apps which consume more battery than necessary.

new policy for android

Google has announced a change in its Play Store Developer Policy, under which developers will now have to ensure that their apps use minimum battery and data when running in the background. Apps that do not follow this rule will either be warned or may be removed from the Play Store.

Google says that this step has been taken with the aim of improving the user experience and maintaining the performance of the device.

Monitoring background processing

Until now, many apps, especially those to social media, shopping or location-tracking, remained constantly active in the background on users’ phones. These apps not only drain the battery but also put additional burden on data and processor.

Under Google’s new system, Android will now limit the background activity of these apps. Developers have to explain what the app does in the background and why. Through this transparency, users will also know which app is taking more resources than necessary.

New features expected in Android 15

According to sources, Google is preparing to add a feature called “Smart Battery Management” in the upcoming Android 15. This system will automatically identify those apps which repeatedly run in the background and drain the battery. The system will automatically put such apps into “sleep mode”, which will limit their background activity.

Along with this, users will get a new “Battery Usage Insight” panel in Settings, which will show which app is consuming how much battery and for how long it has been active.

Users will get benefit

This change will not only improve battery backup, but will also reduce the problem of heating and slow performance of the phone. This will prove to be a big relief especially for users using old devices.

Warning for developers

Google has clearly said that strict action will be taken against those apps which continuously access GPS, Bluetooth or network without any reason. The company has given developers a few months to update the apps according to the new policies.
