Hong Kong authorities have warned residents to be vigilant and put personal safety first while traveling in Japan after reporting an increase in attacks targeting Chinese nationals.
The Hong Kong Security Bureau updated the outbound travel information on Saturday on its website, saying since mid-2025, there has been an increasing trend of attack incidents against Chinese citizens in Japan, Global Times reported.
It urged Hong Kong residents who are planning to travel to Japan or are already there to stay vigilant, pay attention to personal safety, monitor local announcements on the latest developments, and follow information issued by Chinese embassies and consulates in Japan, the South China Morning Post reported.
Mainland China last week advised its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan, following a diplomatic feud sparked by remarks from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about a hypothetical attack on Taiwan.
The number of foreign visitors to Japan between January and September rose 17.7% from a year earlier to around 31.65 million, marking the fastest pace on record in surpassing 30 million within a year.
China was the biggest source of visitors to Japan so far this year with around 7.49 million visitors, up 42.7% from a year earlier.
In July, visitor numbers from Hong Kong fell amid earthquake rumors, but the situation improved in following months.
