A Colombian football club backed by US investors, including Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, has concluded its first campaign under new ownership rooted to the foot of the table. Bogota outfit La Equidad were acquired by a celebrity-packed consortium, which also involves Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, back in January this year.
However, while Reynolds and Mac have enjoyed remarkable success with Wrexham, matters haven't unfolded as hoped in South America so far. Their side finished bottom of Categoria Primera A, Colombia's top division, despite securing a resounding 4-0 triumph over Deportivo Periera in their concluding fixture of the regular campaign last week.
Prior to the encounter, the club shared a statement on social media encouraging fans to attend in large numbers to "experience together the close of a story that defined Colombian football." The underwhelming season comes as La Equidad, who are based at Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, gear up for a major transformation in the new year.
The full details remain under wraps, though the club will start next term with a new name and a departure from its customary green kit as the owners begin implementing changes. In the meantime, club president Nicolas Maya has delivered a statement expressing regret to supporters regarding the team's disappointing displays.
"We know that the sporting results this season were not what we expected nor what our fans deserve," Maya said "We made risky decisions, betting on young talent and building a model with projection, but not everything went as we wanted. Even so, we are convinced it was a necessary step to start building something lasting and sustainable."

The star-studded consortium behind La Equidad's takeover secured a 99 per cent stake in the club for roughly $30million (£23m) in January. The famous investors also include American baseball icon Justin Verlander, supermodel Kate Upton and NFL star Odell Beckham Jr.
Property mogul Al Tylis leads the group alongside former Swansea City executive Sam Porter. As part of the transformation, the club will be dropping "Seguros" from its official name, Club Deportivo La Equidad Seguros SA.
The alteration was announced earlier this year as the club sought to separate itself from its previous connections to an insurance company. The change gained backing from the Major Division of Colombian Professional Football and has been officially registered with the Bogota Chamber of Commerce.
The purchase represents Reynolds and Mac's third venture into football ownership, following their Wrexham takeover in February 2021 and purchasing a stake in Mexican side Club Necaxa via the Tylis-Porter consortium in April 2024.
The complete plans for La Equidad are yet to be unveiled, but a behind-the-scenes documentary series was released following their initial two acquisitions.
The duo have guided Wrexham to three successive promotions in recent years, elevating the club from the National League to the Championship.
Thanks to the hit documentary 'Welcome to Wrexham', the Red Dragons have gained worldwide recognition as the owners pursue their ultimate dream of reaching the Premier League.
