Tawaf of Kaaba
What is Tawaf in Islam: Kaaba Sharif is considered very holy and special in the religion of Islam. All Muslims from different corners of the world go to Mecca in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj and Umrah. Hajj is one of the five duties of Islam, which is very important for a true Muslim to perform every year. Umrah is similar to Hajj, but it is not a duty on Muslims. There are many differences between Hajj and Umrah, but one thing that is common is the Tawaf of Kaaba Sharif. Be it Hajj or Umrah, all Muslims perform Tawaf i.e. circumambulate around Kaaba during their spiritual journey. Let us know why Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba.
The word Tawaf is derived from the Arabic word 'Tafa', which means to circle something or to go around something. In Islam, during Hajj and Umrah, Muslims circumambulate Kaaba Sharif seven times in anti-clockwise direction. In Tawaf, Muslims circumambulate around the Kaaba starting from Hajre-Aswad (Black Stone). Tawaf is one of the most important rituals of both Hajj and Umrah, without which both these pilgrimages are considered incomplete.
Islamic scholar Mufti Salauddin Qasmi said that Muslims perform Tawaf of Kaaba Sharif because it is an order from Allah to his servants and it is the duty of a Muslim to obey the order of Allah. In such a situation, doing Tawaf of Kaaba is an act of worship and behind it there will be the advice of Allah, whom only He knows. The faith of a Muslim is to follow the path shown by Allah.
Tawaf is also mentioned several times in the Quran Sharif, the holiest book of Islam, which includes Surah Al-Baqarah (2:125), Surah Al-Hajj (22:26) and Surah Al-Hajj (22:29). In these verses, Allah has ordered to circumambulate the Kaaba.
In verse 125 of Surah Al Baqarah, the second and longest of the Quran, Allah commands, ,(O Messenger of Allah, also remind us of that time) when We declared the Kaaba as a place of reward and refuge for people and it was ordered to make (this) place of Ibrahim a place of prayer and we took a promise and promise from Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail to keep (that) house of mine clean for the sake of those doing Tawaf, I'tikaf, Ruku and Sajdah.
In verse 26 of Surah Al-Hajj of the Quran, Allah said, ,And (O Messenger, remember the time) when We revealed the place of the Kaaba for Ibrahim through Ibrahim (and told him) not to associate anything with Me and to keep My House clean for those doing Tawaf, Qayam, Ruku and Sujud.”
Furthermore, in verse 29 of Surah Al-Hajj of the Quran, Allah Almighty commands, “People should remove their (body's) uncleanliness and do the Qadim (worship) and do Tawaf of Khana-e-Kaaba, this is the order.” These verses show that Tawaf of Kaaba Sharif is an old worship that has been going on since the time of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
According to the beliefs related to Islam, when Muslims are doing Tawaf of Kaaba Sharif, at the same time the angels of Allah do Tawaf of 'Bait al-Mamoor' or 'Baitul Mamoor'. In Islam, Baitul Mamoor is a heavenly abode, which exists in the seventh heaven and is located just above the Kaaba on earth. It is also called “Abad Ghar” and the angels circumambulate it, just as humans circumambulate the Kaaba on earth. This place is considered the center of namaz and worship for angels.
There are many types of Tawaf in Islam which are mentioned below:-
There are some different methods of Tawaf for men and women, Ramal is one of them. You have often seen pilgrims walking in a different style while performing Tawaf, which is called Ramal which is only for men. Walking fast with the chest wide and shoulders raised, taking small steps as if a brave warrior is walking and doing 3 rounds of Tawaf in this condition is called Ramal. Men perform Ramal in the first 3 rounds of Tawaf and complete the remaining 4 rounds in the normal manner. At the same time, there is no order of Ramal for women. They have to complete the entire 7 rounds of Tawaf in the normal manner.
