In one of the most astonishing and unusual finishes in T20 history India A lost to Bangladesh A in a Super Over in the first semi-final of the Mens Asia Cup Rising Stars in Doha on Friday. During the run chase India needed 4 runs from the last ball but a mistake by Bangladesh captain Akbar Ali allowed Harsh Dubey and Nehal Wadhera to run three runs and force a Super Over. Then India A surprised everyone by not sending Vaibhav Suryavanshi to bat. Captain Jitesh Sharma and Ashutosh Sharma were both out on the first ball. Bangladesh A also lost a wicket on the first ball of the Super Over but Suyash Sharma bowled a wide. Earlier Vaibhav got off to a fast start but was dismissed for 38 runs off 15 balls and his wicket slowed India A’s momentum. In the first innings Bangladesh A began well and finished even stronger posting 194/6 after India A captain Jitesh Sharma chose to bowl first. Opener Habibur Rahman was the top scorer with 65 runs off 46 balls and when he got out in the 16th over it seemed like India could keep Bangladesh under 170. But an incredible finish from Meherob and Yasir added 50 runs in the last two overs taking Bangladesh A to a big total. Even though Yasir Ali was out on the first ball of the Super Over Bangladesh managed to score the needed single run from a wide by leg-spinner Suyash Sharma to reach the final. Earlier India looked on track to chase down Bangladesh’s 194 as Suryavanshi (38 off 15 balls) and Arya (44 off 23 balls) took India past 50 in just 3.1 overs. Suryavanshi punished Mondol in the first over with two sixes and a four and hit two more sixes off off-spinner Meherob Hasan. Arya started slowly but soon joined in hitting two consecutive sixes off Jishan Alam and then driving left-arm pacer Abu Hider for 4 6 4. India reached 53 in 3.3 overs. The momentum stopped when Suryavanshi was dismissed by Abdul Saqlain losing his grip while attempting a big shot that went straight to Alam. Arya fell soon after caught in the deep off Rakibul Hasan. Then Jitesh Sharma (33 off 23 balls) and Nehal Wadhera (32 not out) added 52 runs for the fourth wicket taking India to 150 for three in 14.5 overs. Jitesh was then dismissed by a diving Akbar Ali while trying to sneak a single past deep third man. At 150 for four India needed 45 runs from the remaining 30 balls a chase possible with big hitters like Ramandeep Ashutosh and Wadhera at the crease. However none could accelerate in the final five overs. The situation came down to 16 runs from the last six balls and four from the final delivery. Bangladesh seemed in control but a mistake by stumper Ali allowed India to steal a third run and tie the score at 194 for six. Hasan bowled a perfect full ball that Wadhera could only push to long-off. Their attempt for a second run put pressure on the fielder and wicketkeeper who failed to hit the stumps letting India level the score. India had only themselves to blame for such a tense finish as Bangladesh had been struggling at 130 for six despite Habibur Rahman’s well-timed 65 off 46 balls. India’s choice to bowl the 19th over with part-time spinner Naman Dhir proved costly as Meherob (48 not out off 18 balls) scored 28 runs with four sixes and a four. The final over by pacer Vysakh Vijayakumar went for 20 runs as Meherob and Ali (17 not out off 9 balls) combined well. The last two overs produced 48 runs giving Bangladesh a total that was just enough to win.
