“The secret to a marriage that has weathered ups and downs yet only grown stronger is loving each other enough,” Chung, 55, wrote on Weibo.
The actress married Zhang, 43, in November 2016 in Beijing, and the couple have since been widely admired for what many describe as their “sweet as honey” partnership. Their relationship traces back to 2015, when they met on Chinese dating show “Perhaps Love.” Their natural chemistry quickly won public support, earning them the nickname “the mermaid couple.”
According to SinchewChung and Zhang “share closely aligned values” and maintain harmony both at home and at work. They frequently appear together on variety shows, perform as a duo and travel extensively, and are seen as “joined at the hip.” Recently they performed a well-received duet on “The Voice of China.”
From the outset the couple faced scrutiny over their 12-year age gap and speculation about family planning and income differences. They have repeatedly countered rumors, including false claims of divorce with legal statements and public displays of unity.
Zhang has openly criticized sexist remarks directed at their marriage, saying: “Is it wrong for a woman to be successful? If a woman earns more than her husband, does that make the man a gold-digger? She’s successful, and I’m the lucky one.”
Observers often note their contrasting yet complementary personalities: Chung is fiery, passionate and outgoing, while Zhang is calm, analytical, and thoughtful.
Chung once said that maintaining their marriage comes down to a straightforward philosophy.
“There is no perfect marriage. Arguments are inevitable, but what matters is that after all the noise, both people still want to hold hands and walk through life together.”
She added that love “has nothing to do with age or what others think, but with the light two people see in each other’s eyes.”
Zhang echoes her view, saying that harmony comes from understanding and mutual support.
“When problems arise, we should face them together, not turn each other into targets of blame,” he said.
Chung has also remarked that Zhang is “older than his age” in temperament, while she maintains a youthful outlook, a contrast she believes helps bridge their age gap.
Like most couples, they experience occasional conflicts. Chung sees small arguments as normal and even constructive, while Zhang compares them to “catching a cold once in a while,” which means that they are insignificant and temporary.
Born in Canada to a Chinese-Vietnamese father and a Vietnamese mother, Chung moved to Hong Kong in 1993 to compete in the Miss Chinese International Pageant. Although she did not speak Chinese at the time, she won the competition and began a successful acting career.
Her breakthrough came with the 1993 film “The Bride with White Hair 2,” and she later starred opposite major names including Stephen Chow and Jet Li.
She was previously married to a Belgian man in 1998 and to Taiwanese musician Jon Yen in 2003. She and Yen separated in 2011 after having two daughters together.
