A 38-year-old woman, daughter-in-law of a prominent industrialist, was found dead at her home in Vasant Vihar on Tuesday, prompting police to open an inquest into what appears to be a case of suicide, reported TOI.
Police said no suicide note was recovered from the spot. However, officers found a personal diary in which the woman had written about her marital relationship, trust, and emotional struggles. A senior officer familiar with the investigation said the entries recovered so far do not attribute blame to anyone. Statements of her husband and immediate family members have also been recorded.
According to police, the woman was discovered unconscious in the couple’s bedroom. Her husband rushed her to a nearby hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The hospital informed police around noon.
According to the report, officials have said the body was later moved to Safdarjung Hospital for an autopsy, after which it was handed over to the family for cremation.
The couple, married since 2010, have two children. The inquiry is being conducted under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which governs probes into suspected suicides and unnatural deaths.
Rajinder Singh, the family’s lawyer, said the husband had left home for the gym around 9am while the children were at school.
"He received a call from the woman's mother at the gym that she was not answering the phone. On reaching home, he opened the bedroom door and found her unconscious," Singh told TOI. "We are not aware of any suicide note."
At the mortuary, however, the woman's brother alleged that her marriage had been troubled and claimed she had told him she was being assaulted and that her husband was involved with someone else.
Singh dismissed the allegations as “unfounded and hurtful,” asserting that the couple had shared a stable family life for 15 years.
"They have two children and were living happily for 15 years. Her mother has been with us since Tuesday. The families did not even wish to conduct a post-mortem and wanted to cremate her together with full respect," he told the news outlet.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and further details will depend on forensic and medical reports.
