WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Maxton Hall season 2 and book spoilers from Save Us by Mona Kasten
How did Maxton Hall season 2 end?The second season of Maxton Hall recently concluded on Amazon Prime Video, following the success of other young adult dramas like The Summer I Turned Pretty and the Our Fault series. The season ended with a shocking cliffhanger, leaving the fate of main characters Ruby Bell (portrayed by Harriet Herbig-Matten) and James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) in turmoil. Despite their romance remaining intact, both their futures seemed uncertain, reports the Mirror.
The second season has been a whirlwind. The series concluded with Ruby being suspended from Maxton Hall after she was wrongly identified as the student involved in an affair with teacher Mr Graham Sutton (Eidin Jalali) due to a leaked photo.
In reality, it was Lydia Beaufort (Sonja Weißer) who was engaged in the illicit relationship with Mr Sutton.
This development jeopardised all of Ruby's aspirations for attending Oxford University, as her acceptance into the esteemed institution seemed highly unlikely following such a scandal. She had been diligently preparing for her scholarship exams to ensure she could continue her studies, but she never got the opportunity to take them.
Mr Sutton was escorted away by the police, leaving a distraught Lydia to watch helplessly as James tried to comfort a shattered Ruby over the school's decision. Despite her protests to the headteacher that the photo was innocent, her pleas were ignored.
The shocking twist followed what seemed like a reconciliation between Mr Sutton and James, even sharing a handshake. Mr Sutton and Lydia had decided to keep their twin babies after discovering she was pregnant, bracing themselves for the backlash from their forbidden teacher-student relationship.
Adding to the drama, James' scheming father Mortimer Beaufort (Fedja van Huêt) stirred up trouble when his son skipped an important board meeting to attend a lacrosse match. James' absence resulted in the company's largest investor withdrawing their funding, leaving Mortimer livid and blaming Ruby before seeking revenge on her.
Ruby's scholarship offer was rescinded due to Mortimer's influence, with James trying to persuade Alice Campbell (Proschat Madani) to overturn the decision. Mortimer also seemed to have played a part in manipulating the will, making it appear as if Cordelia Beaufort (Clelia Sarto) had left everything to her husband, leaving the twins with nothing following her death.
With the second series of Maxton Hall concluding on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, many fans are turning to the original novels by German author Mona Kasten for clues about what's next. The book trilogy serves as the inspiration for the Amazon Prime Video series, with the final novel, Save Us, set to shape the upcoming third season.
As with all television adaptations, there will be some differences between the show and the books, but here's a glimpse at the plot of the third book and potential future storylines.
What happens in Maxton Hall book 3 Save Us?The narrative of Save Us continues directly from the shocking events of the second book, with Ruby returning home following her suspension from Maxton Hall. She begins to suspect that James may have been responsible for leaking the photo.
However, she remains convinced that James wouldn't betray her in such a way and instead seeks answers at the Beaufort residence.
Lydia is left grappling with guilt over Mr Sutton losing his job and Ruby being blamed. The situation takes another dramatic twist when Mortimer reveals to Lydia that he knows about her secret relationship with Mr Sutton.
In a shocking revelation, Lydia announces that she's pregnant, leaving Mortimer seething with anger. More concerned about the family's reputation than Lydia's wellbeing, Mortimer orders her to leave their home.
James intervenes in their heated dispute, attempting to persuade their father not to evict his sister and maintains that this action won't alter anything about the Beaufort name or the company, leading to a tussle where Lydia is knocked unconscious. She later regains consciousness but the situation remains unchanged.
Ruby finally encounters the twins and James verifies that he wasn't the one who sent the photos. Instead, it transpires that Cyril Vega (Ben Felipe) played a key role in assisting Mortimer.
Cyril pilfered James' phone which contained the photo of Ruby and Mr Sutton on it, passing it onto Mortimer who then manipulated the images and dispatched them to the school.
Mortimer aimed to eliminate both Ruby and Mr Sutton from his children's lives, however he fails in this with James and Lydia refusing to relinquish love. In the end, James and Cyril aid in vindicating Ruby's name and present the original photos to the school.
Ruby's dreams of attending Oxford University become a reality and she resides in a nearby flat that James purchases for them. Meanwhile, James initiates a travel blog and targets journalism and photography.
It's disclosed that Mortimer fabricated the will and James and Lydia each inherited half of the firm with nothing allocated to their father. Lydia gives birth to the twins, who will eventually work for the company with Aunt Ophelia (Dagny Dewath) doing so on their behalf until they reach the appropriate age.
