I have lost count of the amount of times Ed Balls has been accused of biased. The presenter, 58, regularly interviews politicians on Good Morning Britain, most recently Labour MPs since the party came into power following the 2024 election. Of course, every morning TV presenter tends to have political leanings, and that's not necessarily a problem as long as they remain impartial.
Ed Balls, however, is a special case. Before becoming a presenter, he was a senior Labour politician, serving as Education Secretary from 2007 to 2010 and as Shadow Chancellor from 2011 to 2015. On top of that, he's married to the current Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper. As fans pointed out, his wife was actually sat behind Rachel Reeves when she announced her disastrous budget on Wednesday.
So it's understandable why viewers take issue with him regularly interviewing Labour politicians on breakfast TV. But the problem is, Good Morning Britain is now reaching a point where viewers believe it lacks credibility whenever Ed interviews a politician, which is almost everyday...
We've had it twice this week alone. The first instance came when Ed was joined by Green Party leader Zack Polanski.
The debate sparked several bias accusations towards Ed, including remarks like: "Ex Labour minister Ed Balls, who happens to be married to the Foreign Secretary, invokes 'economists' to attack the Green Party's proposal for a wealth tax."
The next round of fury came just one day later, when Ed spoke to Chancellor Rachel Reeves. To put it simply, fans were seething. Some even went so far as to demand resignations from both of them.
I'm not here to call for Ed Balls to be sacked, as several fans have demanded in the past. But with this huge conflict of interest looming over every episode, is there really any need for him to remain a main presenter?
They have a whole set of rotating presenters on that show, so I do wonder why Ed has been chosen to front it every Monday to Thursday. Could he not take on a similar role to Ranvir Singh or Charlotte Hawkins? They frequently appear on the show, but usually join the main presenters in the studio to deliver the rest of the day's news.
Wouldn't that be a simple solution that satisfies both the presenter and the viewers? I'm not suggesting Ed would want to step down from his regular role, but this way he could still present without facing the constant abuse from fans.
And it's not just personal attacks, he is literally married to the Foreign Secretary. Good Morning Britain needs to make a change otherwise online trolls will always have a reason to discredit the show.
