Chelsea now face £56million problem as reality of contract clause is laid bare

Chelseaare on the verge of missing out on millions of pounds as part of the deal that saw Nicolas Jackson head to Bayern Munich.

Jackson left the Blues at the end of the summer transfer window to join Bayern on a loan deal with an obligation to buy that was due to kick in next summer.

As part of the agreement, Chelseareceived a whopping £14.2million loan fee from the Bundesliga giants after the move was left in danger of collapsing before it eventually got completed on deadline day.

The obligation to buy clause was due to see Bayern pay a further £56.2million to Chelsea to sign Jackson on a permanent deal next summer.

However, with less than half of the season played and the January transfer window fast approaching, that particular clause is in danger of being impossible to fulfil.

Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeness claimed that Jackson has to play at least 40 games for Bayern, although it remains unclear if this is appearances or starts.

Jackson has so far started just five matches for Bayern during his loan spell, meaning he could need another 35 more in order for the obligation to buy clause to be activated.

In terms of total appearances, Jackson has featured 14 times for Bayern so far this season, meaning 26 more games for the German giants could be enough to activate the clause.

Bayern have just 23 more matches left to play in the Bundesliga this season, and there is a danger that Jackson could miss some of them over December and January. There are also three league phases in the Champions League remaining, and the potential for nine more from the play-off round all the way up to the final.

The Africa Cup of Nations will take place in a few weeks' time, with Jackson likely to take part in the tournament for Senegal.

The first match of the group stages for Senegal will see them take on Botswana on December 23, with the final match taking place on December 30. After that, Jackson's involvement in the tournament will depend on how Senegal fare in the group stages and knockout rounds.

Bayern have a Bundesliga match on December 21, just two days before Senegal's opening match at AFCON, and it remains to be seen if Jackson will be available for that fixture or have already linked up with his compatriots for the tournament.

The Bundesliga will resume on January 11 after the winter break, where Jackson could still be taking part in AFCON, with the tournament continuing until the final on January 18.

If Jackson needs 40 starts for Bayern to activate the obligation to buy clause, then it will be very unlikely, given the number of games remaining and the possibility of the striker missing several fixtures while representing Senegal.

Not to mention, Jackson is behind Harry Kane in the pecking order at the Allianz Arena, which makes starting matches even more difficult to achieve.
