The Chennai division of the Southern Railway has announced that starting January 1, 2026, sleeper class passengers will begin receiving bedroll service on select trains. These bedrolls will be fully sanitized and ready to use.
Indian Railways makes various changes from time to time for passenger convenience. Recently, the Indian Railways has also decided to introduce a major facility for sleeper class passengers. Bedrolls, i.e. sheets, pillows, and pillow covers, previously available only in AC coaches, will now be available in sleeper coaches as well. This facility will be offered on-demand and on-payment, so passengers can access clean and sanitized bedrolls if needed. So, let us tell you today how much you will have to pay for pillows and blankets in sleeper coaches.
When will this facility be available?
The Chennai division of Southern Railway has announced that starting January 1, 2026, sleeper class passengers on select trains will begin receiving a bedroll service. These bedrolls will be fully sanitized and ready to use, and passengers can simply request them from the attendant. This facility was initially introduced as a pilot project in 2023-24 and received a positive response from passengers. Following this, Southern Railway has decided to implement it permanently. Additionally, passengers traveling in sleeper coaches currently carry their own bedrolls, which makes luggage heavier. The lack of sheets and pillows during winter makes travel uncomfortable. With this new facility, passengers will be able to purchase sheets and pillows as needed without carrying extra luggage.
How much will it cost to pay for bedrolls?
The Railways has kept the petrol charges in sleeper coaches affordable so that every passenger can use this service as needed. According to the Railways, a bedsheet will be provided for 20 rupees. A pillow and pillow cover will cost ₹30. Additionally, a bedsheet, a pillow, and a pillow cover will cost ₹50.
This facility will be available first on these trains.
The Railways will initially implement this facility on 10 trains in the Chennai division. Passengers will be able to avail of on-demand petrol only on these 10 trains.
