New Delhi: Indias star cricketer Washington Sundars role has been unclear in the squad lately. At times he steps in to bat at number three for India in Test cricket and on other days he is pushed down to number eight. Sundar who is known as a bowling all-rounder hasnt been trusted with the ball enough which was evident in England and again against South Africa recently.
In the ongoing ODI series Sundar walked in to bat at number five in Ranchi. He got the spot because Axar patel who bats there was either rested or left out from the team. With the ball Sundar bowled only three overs while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja together delivered 19 overs.
Washington walked in to bat at number six in Raipur ODI
During the second ODI in Raipur Sundar was pushed own to number six with stand-in captain KL Rahul promoting himself. While India defended a 359-run total Sundar was handed only 4 overs and he conceded 7 runs an over but Kuldeep bowled his full spell despite going at 7.80. From the outside the picture looks confusing and its possible even Sundar isnt fully sure about the role expected of him.
Ahead of the third ODI against South Africa at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium Ryan ten Doeschate was questioned about Sundars role in the squad. Indias assistant coach clarified that for this series Sundar has been selected primarily as a batting all-rounder. With the heavy dew limiting how much the spinners can bowl Sundar is currently being viewed more as a batter who can contribute with the ball when needed.
Indias assistant coach opened up about Sundars role
In those conditions you can’t bowl 20 overs of spin. Washington is still learning; he is confident. He has had a very good 12 months. He is working on certain things like having five fielders outside the circle while batting Indias assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters in Visakhapatnam.
If Jadeja and Kuldeep struggle Sundar could end up bowling more than just a few overs. But going by Ryans remarks it appears the team management has already limited how much they expect him to bowl.
