We all use woolen clothes, blankets and quilts in our homes during the cold season and they get dirty very quickly, but it is not possible to send them for dry wash again and again. In such a situation, it is very easy to wash woolen clothes, blankets and quilts in the machine at home. Just take care of the right mode, right detergent and right temperature. By doing this, the clothes will not shrink or get damaged, and your quilt/blanket will look like new again. Let us know some easy and safe methods with the help of which you can clean woolen clothes, blankets and quilts in the washing machine without spoiling them.
Use only Wool, Delicate or Gentle mode in the washing machine. This causes less rubbing on the clothes and the fibers remain safe.
Woolen clothes can shrink in hot water. Always use water of temperature less than 30°C.
Special Woolen Detergent or Liquid Detergent is better for woolen clothes. This maintains the softness and texture of the clothes.
Rapid spin may cause the wool to stretch or lose shape. Spin speed 400–600 RPM is fine.
Wash woolen clothes only in sufficient space, so that there is less rubbing and they do not get spoiled.
Applying softener to woolen clothes can weaken their fibres. If necessary, use only Wool Friendly Softener.
The hot air from the dryer can shrink the wool and ruin the texture. Always dry by keeping it flat in a ventilated place (flat dry method).
If the blanket is heavy then it is better to wash it in a front-load machine. Roll the blanket before putting it in the machine, so that balance is maintained. Be sure to read the care label given on the blanket/quilt.
Add 2-3 spoons of baking soda in the washing machine water. This eliminates odor and makes clothes look fresh.
Adding ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle eliminates odors. It also keeps the fiber soft.
