Cyber fraudsters have a new weapon—call forwarding! Scammers are tricking unsuspecting users into dialing special codes that start with *#, giving them control over the victim’s phone. Once activated, all SMS, OTPs, and bank notifications get redirected to the scammer, leading to huge financial losses. Here’s how this scam works and how you can protect yourself.

How the Call Forwarding Scam Works

According to cybersecurity experts, scammers often pose as bank officials, police officers, or customer service representatives. They claim there is a technical issue or verification required and ask the victim to dial a specific code beginning with *#.

Once the code is dialed, call forwarding is activated in the background without the user’s knowledge. This means incoming calls, messages, and even OTPs from banks or financial services are redirected to the scammer. Reports from Delhi and Mumbai reveal victims losing lakhs within minutes using this method. Cyber awareness platforms have warned users not to dial any unknown *# codes, as it can open a “backdoor” to your phone.

The Scam Step by Step

Call forwarding is a legitimate feature used to redirect calls to another number. Scammers exploit it in the following way:

  1. The fraudster calls, claiming to be from a trusted organization.

  2. They create a sense of urgency, asking the user to dial a “verification code” for security purposes.

  3. When the code is dialed, call forwarding activates silently.

  4. From then on, all calls and SMS messages are redirected to the scammer, who can use the information for financial fraud.

This scam works on both Android and iPhone devices since call forwarding is available across networks.

How to Check if Your Calls Are Being Forwarded

If you suspect your phone is compromised, checking call forwarding status is simple. Dial the following code on any network, including Jio, Airtel, or Vodafone-Idea:

*➡️ #21#

After dialing, your phone will display one of the following messages:

  • Call Forwarding Active – Your calls are being forwarded.

  • Not Forwarded – Your phone is safe.

How to Deactivate Call Forwarding

If call forwarding is active, follow these steps immediately:

  1. Dial the network’s deactivation code (usually ##21#).

  2. Change all passwords, banking PINs, and UPI PINs.

  3. Inform your bank of any unusual activity.

  4. File a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in.

Tips to Avoid Call Forwarding Scams

  • Never dial unknown codes starting with *#.

  • Banks or authorities will never ask you to dial such codes over the phone.

  • Avoid falling for urgent “do it now” calls or messages.

  • Regularly check your phone’s call forwarding settings.

Call forwarding scams are fast and clever, but a few precautionary steps can save you from becoming a victim. Always stay alert and verify before dialing any unknown numbers.
