Gardeners urged to do 1 thing with leaves before the end of December

They cover the garden in a carpet of differing tones of browns and heap up where the wind blows. The seasonal leaf drop is unlike any other seasonal act; it is such a visible display of change.

My mind turns to collecting as many leaves as will fill numerous old compost bags. Leaves are so very good for creating mulch and soil improver. The collected leaves should be placed into old compost bags.

The bags should have a few air holes at the base to circulate air. Once filled, the bags can be tightly sealed and placed into a sheltered spot for 12 months.

In that time, the leaves will decompose into a nutritious mulch, perfect for quilting our beds and borders with and digging into our soil to improve the consistency and nutrient levels.

There is something very fulfilling about creating mulch, as once the yearly cycle starts, we can expect a supply of mulch to continuously improve our garden soil.

The more bags, the merrier, and hidden behind a shed or greenhouse is the ideal storage place. We can expect to open the bags this time next year and be delighted by what has been created.
