Air pollution has become a serious health threat across large parts of the country, especially in Delhi-NCR. Recently, the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed 400 in Delhi, forcing authorities to implement GRAP-IV restrictions. While polluted air is known to cause coughing and breathing difficulties, its harmful impact on eye health is often ignored. Many people are now complaining of constant eye itching, burning, redness, and irritation. In severe cases, regular medication becomes necessary, and schools have even been shut to protect children.

Although several eye drops are available in the market, Ayurveda also offers natural and effective ways to protect the eyes from pollution-related damage.

In an exclusive conversation with TV9, Jaipur-based Ayurveda expert Dr. Kiran Gupta shared practical Ayurvedic tips to keep eyes safe during high pollution levels and reduce dependence on medicines.

How air pollution affects the eyes

Dr. Gupta explained that polluted air can lead to multiple eye-related problems, including:

  • Itching and irritation

  • Redness and swelling of eye veins

  • Watery or dry eyes

  • Blurred vision

  • Eye allergies

  • Conjunctivitis and infections

Children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems are particularly vulnerable, as polluted air acts like a toxin for their eyes and lungs.

Ayurvedic remedies for eye care during pollution

Dr. Gupta suggested several simple and natural remedies rooted in Ayurveda:

  • Triphala eye wash:
Washing the eyes with Triphala water can help reduce inflammation naturally. You can prepare it by soaking amla, harad, and baheda in water, or by using Triphala powder diluted in clean water.

  • Herbal eye drops:
Ayurvedic products such as Patanjali’s Divya Drishti may help soothe irritation. Natural juices like ginger, onion, and cucumber are also believed to provide relief when used appropriately.

  • Cucumber slices:
Placing fresh cucumber slices on the eyes helps cool, hydrate, and relax them. Due to its high water content, cucumber is especially beneficial for tired and irritated eyes.

  • Eye exercises:
Performing simple eye exercises once a day can help relax eye muscles and reduce strain caused by pollution and screen exposure.

  • Water splash method:
Fill your mouth with water and gently splash cool or normal water on your eyes while washing your face. This traditional method helps refresh and cleanse the eyes.

Additional precautions to protect your eyes
  • Avoid going outdoors during peak pollution hours unless absolutely necessary

  • Use air purifiers at home, or keep indoor plants like money plants that naturally purify air

  • If using heaters during winter, ensure proper ventilation, as dry air can worsen eye irritation
