India vice-captain Shubman Gill who has been struggling with form will miss the last two T20I matches against South Africa due to a toe injury sources told PTI. Reports say he got injured during a practice session and the team is taking all necessary steps to help him recover quickly.
Shubman had an extended batting session at the nets on the eve of the fourth T20 International. Towards the end of the session he was hit on the toe while batting in the nets. He was in pain and was hobbling. It would have been difficult for him to play on Wednesday. Hence he didnt accompany the team as there was little chance of him playing this game. At this point it is difficult to say if he will play in Ahmedabad a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
With the T20I series against New Zealand being the last before the T20 World Cup and the same squad expected for both events the national selectors and team management want to take every precaution with one of their key top-order batsmen Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill had already missed the Test and ODI series against South Africa due to a neck injury he suffered on the second day of the first Test in Kolkata which required a two-day hospital stay. He missed the Guwahati Test and the following ODIs where he was also meant to captain the team.
He was declared fit by the Centre of Excellence (COE) ahead of the T20I series even as critics questioned his place in the side over Sanju Samson who had scored three centuries in the previous series. Shubman Gills performance in the T20I series has been modest scoring 4 and 0 in the first two matches and 28 off 28 balls in the third game in Dharamsala where he looked out of rhythm.
Despite this the entire coaching staff led by Gautam Gambhir has expressed full confidence in their star batter expecting him to perform well in the T20 World Cup starting in February next year.
