If you travel by train and often carry more luggage than necessary, this news is very important for you. The railways have now made it clear that passengers will have to pay extra charges for carrying luggage exceeding the prescribed limit during train journeys. This means that baggage rules for train travel are going to become stricter, just like in air travel.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this important information in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. In response to a question in the Lok Sabha regarding the luggage limit for train travel, the Railway Minister stated that a free baggage allowance is already fixed for passengers according to their class, and carrying more luggage than that incurs charges.
Fixed Luggage Limit
In the case of airlines, the free baggage allowance varies depending on the airline and the flight route. Generally, domestic flights allow up to 15 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg of hand luggage for free, while international flights allow 23 to 25 kg or two bags (23 kg each). According to railway rules, each passenger is allowed to carry a certain weight of luggage free of charge based on their travel class. In addition, a maximum limit is also set, within which luggage can be carried by paying a fee. However, carrying more luggage than this is considered against the rules.
Rules for Second Class and Sleeper Class Passengers
Passengers traveling in Second Class on trains are allowed to carry up to 35 kg of luggage free of charge. If a passenger carries more luggage than this, they can carry a maximum of 70 kg, but they will have to pay the prescribed fee. For Sleeper Class passengers, the free allowance is slightly higher. They can carry up to 40 kg of luggage without any extra charge. If needed, they are allowed to carry up to 80 kg of luggage, but this will also incur additional charges.
Stricter Rules in AC and Chair Car
If you travel by AC 3 Tier or Chair Car, the rules are even stricter. In these classes, passengers are allowed to carry only up to 40 kg of luggage, and this is the maximum limit. This means that carrying luggage weighing more than this in AC coaches will not be permitted under the rules.
Why was this rule necessary?
The railways say that excessive luggage not only hinders passenger convenience but also creates problems in terms of safety and cleanliness. Heavy luggage makes movement difficult in the coaches and increases the risk of accidents. Therefore, the railways are now emphasizing the strict enforcement of baggage rules.
Important advice for passengers:
If you are planning to travel by train, please check beforehand whether the weight of your luggage is within the prescribed limit. If you have excess luggage, either book it in advance or be prepared to pay extra charges. A little caution can save you from trouble during your journey.
