Viewers tuning in to the Celebrity MasterChef final were expecting tension, big flavours and a last push for the trophy. What many didn't expect was an emotional moment from John Torode that sparked an outpouring of support - and renewed calls for the BBC to reverse its decision to sack him. As the judges tasted the finalists' dishes, fans noticed Torode appearing visibly moved during the closing cook-off, particularly while sampling rugby legend Alun Wyn Jones's main course. Social media lit up almost instantly, with viewers saying the moment underlined exactly why he should never have been let go.
One fan wrote on X: "John Torode's eyes welled up with tears when tasting a great main Finals dish. Who can replace Torode? No one I can think off. Get him back, don't let him go." Others watching the episode said the judge appeared emotional as the series reached its conclusion, with many branding the scenes hard to watch knowing they marked his final appearance on the show.
"This is hard to watch. John is clearly emotional and should never have been sacked by the @BBC." Another viewer posted: "John's last episode. Rotten," followed by crying emojis.
A third added: "I'm really going to miss John."
Several fans focused on Torode's long-standing presence on the programme and his chemistry with co-judge Grace Dent, arguing the show would not be the same without him.
One wrote: "It will be a real shame if John Torode goes because he and Grace work so well together."
Another said: "I love the rapport between John and Grace. So wrong he's leaving."
Some were even more direct in their criticism of the BBC's decision, with one fan posting: "I think they made a massive mistake canning John Torode, a consummate professional at what he does."
Torode has been a central figure on MasterChef for nearly 20 years, fronting the flagship series and its celebrity spin-offs and becoming one of the BBC's most recognisable food presenters.
However, his future with the broadcaster ended in the summer after an allegation against him was upheld, relating to the use of what was described as "an extremely offensive racist term".
Torode has denied the allegation and said he has "no recollection" of using the term.
In a statement at the time, the corporation said it had not been a "straightforward decision" but added that all celebrities, contestants and guests involved had confirmed they were happy for the shows to be aired.
Drag artist Ginger Johnson was ultimately crowned Celebrity MasterChef champion, beating fellow finalists Alun Wyn Jones and Dawn O'Porter in the nail-biting final.
Johnson's win sparked an immediate reaction online, with one fan celebrating: "Yessssss!!!! Come on Ginger! Let's see how many heads explode at this" and "A worthy winner.".
Others were more divided, with another viewer writing: "Dawn was robbed" and "aw f***s!!!! Are you kidding me. All along I thought dawn would win. But tonight's dishes I was sure Alan had it in the bag. Ginger. No way."
