In earlier times, grandmothers relied more on home remedies than medicines to treat minor health problems. Even today, many of these traditional remedies continue to provide effective relief. During winter, cold and cough become quite common, and persistent coughing can be extremely uncomfortable, often disturbing sleep at night. While cough syrups are easily available, frequent use of medication is not always advisable, making people more cautious about what they consume.
To address this, a nutritionist has shared a simple homemade cough syrup made from kitchen ingredients. This natural remedy not only helps soothe mild cough and cold symptoms but also supports overall immunity.
Ingredients needed for the cough syrup
You will need:
A small piece of ginger (approximately worth ₹10)
One cup of basil (tulsi) leaves
One tablespoon of Sitopaladi churna (available at Ayurvedic or herbal stores)
One teaspoon of black pepper powder
One teaspoon of turmeric powder (or fresh turmeric juice)
Two tablespoons of honey
Honey adds natural sweetness along with nutrients, making the syrup easier to consume.
Method of preparation
First, wash the ginger thoroughly and wipe it dry with a clean cloth. Lightly roast the ginger on a low flame. This step enhances its warming properties and also makes it easier to digest, which is important because digestion often becomes weaker during coughs and colds.
Once roasted, peel the ginger and cut it into small pieces. Wash the basil leaves well and grind them together with the ginger to form a paste. Strain this paste using a sieve or a clean cloth to extract the juice.
Add Sitopaladi churna to the ginger-basil juice. Then mix in black pepper powder, turmeric, and honey. Stir well until all the ingredients are properly combined.
Your homemade cough syrup is now ready. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two or three days.
How to consume
Take one teaspoon of this syrup twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. If stored in the refrigerator, allow it to come to room temperature before consuming.
Important note
These ingredients have traditionally been used to relieve mild cold and cough symptoms and to support natural immunity. However, this remedy is not a cure for any medical condition. If you are pregnant, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or any other health condition, or if you are currently taking medication, consult a doctor before using this remedy.
