Inter-caste marriages still face social pressure, financial insecurity, and family resistance in many parts of India. To encourage social harmony and reduce caste-based discrimination, the Uttar Pradesh government is running a special welfare initiative that provides financial assistance of ₹2.5 lakh to couples who enter into an inter-caste marriage. The scheme is designed not just as monetary support, but as a step toward strengthening equality and brotherhood in society.
The scheme is officially known as the Dr. Ambedkar Social Harmony Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme. Its primary objective is to promote marriages across caste lines, particularly those involving Scheduled Caste (SC) communities, and to help couples begin their married life with financial stability.
According to the government, social equality can only be achieved when people move beyond caste barriers in personal and social relationships. This scheme supports that idea by offering direct financial help to eligible couples.
To avail the benefits of this inter-caste marriage scheme, couples must meet certain eligibility conditions:
At least one partner must belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
The marriage must be legally registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
The application must be submitted within one year of marriage.
Both partners should be Indian citizens and residents of Uttar Pradesh.
The marriage should be the first marriage for both individuals.
Only couples fulfilling all these conditions are considered eligible for financial assistance under the scheme.
The total financial assistance of ₹2.5 lakh is not paid in a single installment. Instead, the amount is distributed in two parts to ensure both immediate and long-term financial security:
₹1.5 lakh is transferred directly to the couple’s joint bank account soon after approval.
The remaining ₹1 lakh is deposited as a Fixed Deposit (FD) for three years, providing future financial support and savings security.
This structure ensures that couples receive immediate help while also building a financial cushion for the future.
Eligible couples can apply for the scheme through the official website of the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department. The application process is completely online, making it accessible and transparent.
While filling out the application form, couples must carefully enter personal, marriage, caste, and bank-related details. The following documents are mandatory:
Marriage registration certificate
Caste certificate
Proof that this is the first marriage for both partners
Affidavit (sworn declaration)
Income certificate
Joint bank account details
Once the application is successfully submitted, an acknowledgement receipt is generated, which can be used for future reference and tracking.
Beyond financial assistance, this scheme plays a crucial role in promoting social inclusion and equality. By supporting inter-caste marriages, the government aims to weaken caste-based discrimination at its roots and encourage a more inclusive mindset.
For couples who choose to break traditional barriers and build relationships based on equality and mutual respect, this scheme offers both moral and financial support—making it a significant step toward a more progressive society.
