Most laptop failures are not caused by age or bad luck, but excessive heat is usually the main cause. We often ignore the signs of this heat. Everyone has experienced those moments at one point or another when the fan gets louder, the laptop surface heats up and performance degrades, yet we keep working.
Many times we keep the laptop on top of the blanket on the bed, in our lap during a long call, or near the wall on a busy desk. It all seems fine at the time, but this is where the problems start.
Modern laptops are quite powerful and their various components are located close to each other. Heat buildup is normal since the processor, graphics, battery, and storage are in one place. For this reason, companies design the airflow system properly. Cold air comes in through the vents while fans expel the heat. If this airflow gets obstructed for some reason, the system gradually starts facing problems.
The side effects of laptop overheating are not immediately visible, rather they develop gradually. Batteries start weakening, thermal paste dries out and fans start working harder, reducing their lifespan. Components slow down over time, generating more heat.
Gradually these problems turn into malfunctions that can be costly or sometimes even impossible to repair. In a thin laptop, if a small component fails, the entire assembly has to be replaced. This is why small habits can turn into big repair expenses later on.
The most effective solution is to follow simple rules, and that is to let your laptop “breathe”. Try to always use it on a flat and hard surface. Placing them on soft surfaces like a bed, sofa or any cushion blocks the vents and traps heat. Even on a table, problems can occur if the vents are near a wall or other objects.
If the back of the laptop is raised slightly, the airflow becomes much better. Simple stands or cooling pads are useful because they provide space for hot air to escape and reduce long-term stress on internal components.
