A highly anticipated film starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal has become one of 2025’s most dramatic box office failures earning only a fraction of what it cost to make. Released during the Christmas holiday season with much fanfare Vrusshabha had been expected to be another major success for the actor but early audience response and ticket sales told a very different story.
What went wrong with Mohanlal starrer?
Vrusshabha was made on a reported budget of Rs 70 crore reflecting its large scale multiple language releases and star-studded cast. However the film’s earnings failed to match these expectations. On its opening day it registered just around Rs 60 lakh at the Indian box office one of the lowest for a Mohanlal project in recent years. Over the next few days daily collections continued to drop with only small upticks on weekends and the movie did not recover momentum.
By the end of six days Vrusshabha had barely earned Rs 2 crore domestically while international earnings were minimal. This brought its worldwide total to around Rs 2 crore a startling figure compared to its high production cost.
The biggest box office bomb of 2025
Industry analysts describe this as one of the biggest box office bombs of the year with losses estimated at about 97 per cent. Many theatres especially in Kerala started pulling the film from screens by its sixth day choosing to limit their losses rather than continue screening a film that was largely empty in showrooms.
The response of audience
Critics and viewers alike have been vocal about the film’s shortcomings. Many reviews pointed to a weak script substandard visual effects and pacing issues which kept audiences from connecting with the story despite Mohanlal’s performance. Social media reactions ranged from disappointment to confusion over the film’s direction and execution.

Directed and written by Nanda Kishore Vrusshabha is a fantasy action drama that features Mohanlal in a dual role portraying both a medieval king and a modern-day businessman. Alongside him the cast includes Samarjit Lankesh Nayan Sarika Ragini Dwivedi Ajay Garuda Ram and Neha Saxena in supporting roles. Despite the strong ensemble and ambitious storytelling the narrative and presentation did not resonate with audiences.
