New Delhi: The new year kicked off with one of the most thrilling matches in SA20 history as the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg witnessed its first-ever Super Over. The high-scoring thriller between Joburg Super Kings (JSK) and Durban Super Giants (DSG) kept spectators on the edge of their seats. The regular match ended in a tie at 205–205 after which JSK emerged victorious in the Super Over further solidifying their unbeaten run in the tournament.
Last-ball tie stadium erupts
The most dramatic moment of the match came on the final ball when wicketkeeper Donovan Ferreira displaying incredible agility ran out Eathan Bosch. This run-out brought DSGs innings to a close at 205 forcing the match into a Super Over. The crowd at the Wanderers Stadium known as the ‘Bullring’ erupted in celebration at this thrilling moment.
Gleeson’s composure in the Super Over JSK’s victory
In the Super Over Richard Gleeson took on the bowling responsibilities for JSK. Despite a dropped catch on the first ball he showed remarkable composure and restricted DSG to just 5 runs. A run-out on the final ball sealed Durban’s fate.
Rossouw and Noor Ahmad face off easy target
Chasing a target of just 6 runs JSK faced no difficulties. Rilee Rossouw hit two boundaries off Noor Ahmad’s bowling to finish the match. With this victory Joburg Super Kings registered their third consecutive win reached the top of the points table and became the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
Ranjan’s fifty and Ferreira’s finishing touch
In the regular match JSK’s strong foundation was laid by Shubham Ranjan’s maiden SA20 half-century. He scored an unbeaten 50 runs off 31 balls. He was ably supported by Donovan Ferreira who smashed 33 runs off just 10 balls taking the team to 205/4. Faf du Plessis and Matthew de Villiers’ quick start also gave JSK a strong platform.
