There has been a rapid increase in the demand for monkeys on New Year in China. Monkeys which were sold for a few thousand rupees are now being sold for Rs 25 lakh each around Beijing. The interesting thing is that even the government agencies of the Jinping government themselves are buying monkeys at such an expensive price. The government has appealed to the common citizens to help in increasing the breeding of monkeys.

In China, apart from naturally rearing monkeys, breeding is also done through bio-chemical methods. According to the NHP Breeding and Development Association of China, it was started in the year 2018. In the year 2021, a maximum of 30,000 monkeys were bred in China.

Monkeys being sold for Rs 25 lakh each

According to the Financial Times, a monkey is currently being sold in China for Rs 25-25 lakh. Monkeys were being sold at the same price in China even in 2021, when the Corona vaccine was being manufactured. After this, the demand for monkeys in China had decreased, but after 5 years the demand for monkeys in China has increased again.

There is a situation of conflict regarding purchasing monkeys from China's lab. Some pharmaceutical companies are also purchasing monkeys from outside. It is being said that if the situation worsens, we may see an increase in monkey smuggling in China like last time. When there was a shortage of monkeys in China in 2021, the supply gap was bridged by smuggling them from Cambodia.

Why is the demand for monkeys increasing in China?

The Chinese government has called for new experiments to beat the world in the medical industry. Under this, many Chinese companies are testing medicines and vaccines. In 2025, Mpox, Corona, Cancer vaccines were tested. Similarly, a vaccine for increasing lifespan is also being tested in China.

Monkeys are needed in these tests. This time the number of tests has increased, while the number of monkeys in China has decreased, due to which the demand for monkeys has increased. Its effect is also visible on the price.

According to the report of Sixtone, on an average, vaccine trials are conducted on 25 thousand monkeys every year in China. This time the number of trials has increased, due to which the prices of monkeys have increased in China.
