Two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is in stable condition following a horrific car accident in Nigeria on Monday. The crash occurred on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Sagamu interchange.
Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV when the vehicle reportedly lost control while overtaking and slammed into a stationary truck.
The accident tragically claimed the lives of two close associates and team members identified as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
Local police confirmed that Joshua was seated in the rear and sustained minor injuries. Viral clips of the aftermath showed a dazed Joshua being helped from the wreckage by rescuers.
In a joint statement local medical professionals confirmed that “both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time.”
His promoter, Matchroom Boxing, released a statement saying, “with profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away.”
The spokesperson added that Anthony “sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to the hospital for checks and treatment.”
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu spoke with the boxer in the hospital and noted on social media, “I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates.”
