North 24 Parganas Highlights: The situation in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal turned tense after a violent confrontation erupted between local residents and police personnel during an operation to stop unauthorized construction. The incident not only resulted in injuries to multiple police officers but also raised serious concerns about law enforcement safety, political influence, and the rule of law in sensitive regions of the district.

The unrest unfolded in the Chuchura locality under the Boyarmari II Gram Panchayat, which falls within the jurisdiction of the Nazat Police Station in the Basirhat subdivision. Acting on a formal complaint regarding illegal construction on a disputed plot of land, the police reached the site late on Friday night. According to official sources, the land in question was already under legal restrictions, with prohibitory orders in force following a court directive.
At the time of the incident, prohibitory regulations under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure were applicable to the land. These restrictions were imposed to prevent unlawful activities and maintain public order. Despite clear legal instructions, attempts were allegedly made to continue construction activities, directly challenging the authority of the court and local administration.
When police officials instructed those present at the site to immediately stop the construction work, the situation escalated rapidly. Individuals involved reportedly refused to comply and entered into a heated argument with the officers. What began as a verbal confrontation soon turned violent, with bricks and stones being hurled at the police team. Several officers sustained injuries, and a police vehicle was damaged during the attack, further intensifying the chaos.
To restore order, additional police forces were deployed in large numbers. The reinforcement helped bring the situation under control and prevented further escalation. As part of the immediate action, eight individuals were arrested in connection with the violence. Several others, including the head of the Boyarmari II Gram Panchayat, were detained for questioning to determine their possible involvement or knowledge of the incident.
Investigators have alleged that the illegal construction attempt was backed by supporters of Sheikh Shahjahan, a prominent local leader associated with the Trinamool Congress. Shahjahan, who is currently lodged in a correctional facility, has been a controversial figure in the region. Authorities believe that his influence may have played a role in emboldening individuals to defy court orders and confront law enforcement officials.
Senior officials from the Basirhat Police District confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway. Law enforcement agencies are actively searching for other suspects who may have fled the scene. Officials have reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of attacking police personnel or attempting illegal construction in violation of judicial orders.
The incident has also drawn attention due to its connection with earlier events in the same district. On January 5, 2024, a team from the Enforcement Directorate visited the Agarhati area under Sandeshkhali Block I to investigate a high-profile ration corruption case. That operation targeted Sheikh Shahjahan, who was then serving as the Executive Director of the North 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad.
During the Enforcement Directorate operation, Shahjahan’s supporters allegedly attacked the investigation team. Subsequent revelations brought forward serious accusations, including land grabbing and harassment of women. In February, widespread protests erupted across Sandeshkhali as villagers openly accused Shahjahan and his associates of systematic abuse of power. These protests highlighted deep-rooted grievances and fear among local residents.
After remaining absconding for nearly 55 days following the attack on enforcement officials, Shahjahan was arrested on February 29, 2024. His arrest was seen as a significant development in restoring public confidence. The recent clash at Nazat Police Station jurisdiction suggests that the impact of his alleged activities continues to influence the region, posing ongoing challenges for governance and law enforcement.
