Bijasan Mata Temple (Salkanpur), situated on a hill in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh, is considered to be the main attraction center of devotees. This ancient Shaktipeeth is known not only in the local area but across the country for its wish fulfillment, spiritual power and natural beauty. Every year, during Navratri and other auspicious occasions, lakhs of devotees come here to seek the darshan and blessings of the Mother Goddess, due to which a scene of devotion and enthusiasm is seen in the temple premises.

 

It is said that the worship of Bijasan Mata here helps the devotees to overcome the challenges of life, attain family happiness and peace and strengthen the emotional energy. One has to climb more than 1,000 steps to reach the temple, which also proves to be a spiritual journey for the devotees. Apart from this, development of facilities like ropeway for the elderly and especially those unable to travel is also underway.

 

Main features of the temple

The temple of Bijasan Mata is considered a Siddhapeetha and is situated on a small peak of the Vindhyachal range. The temple is on a mountain about 800 feet high and there are about 1,000–1,400 steps to climb up. This climb is also considered a devotional ritual for the devotees. In recent years, facilities like ropeway (mentioned as available/developed only in some sources) have also been provided for elderly and disabled devotees, so that more people can easily visit. The natural landscape around the temple is calm and lush green and beautiful views of the surrounding forests and area are visible from the top.

Beliefs to this temple

Place of accomplishment and fulfillment of wishes: Local belief is that the blessings of Bijasan Mata bear fruits very quickly. By coming here, the wishes of the devotees, especially the wish of having children, family happiness, prosperity and freedom from diseases are fulfilled.

Goddess of power and protection: The goddess is considered to be the form of Shakti in the form of Vindhyavasini. She protects from evil, obstacles and troubles. That’s why many devotees come for relief and health- prayers.

 

Mythological story to the temple

According to folklore and local history, about 300 years ago a group of nomads (herders/traders) stopped for rest on this hill. Suddenly when they went to search for their missing animals, they found the divine form of a girl who indicated the location of the goddess. When he worshiped at that place, his lost animals were found back and after that miracle, the idol of the goddess installed there was worshipped. As devotion increased, the local people came together to build the temple and gradually this place became an important pilgrimage for devotees.

Major festivals and rituals

Navratri (Both Spring/Chaitra and Autumn): The biggest festival at the temple is celebrated during Navratri. At this time lakhs of devotees come and special fairs and Bhandaras are organised.

 

Magh Mela/Special Event: There has been a tradition of special fairs and religious programs around February-March.

 

Daily Aarti and Darshan: There is regular aarti in the morning, afternoon and evening. Darshan timings usually remain from morning to evening. Schedules can change from year to year, so it’s best to confirm times with locals before visiting.
