Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has landed in New York, hours after he and his wife were captured by US forces who stormed his residence in Caracas amid a series of strikes targeting Venezuela's capital. The Venezuelan leader and Cilia Flores, his wife, were pictured at about 10pm GMT getting off a plane at the Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York.
This comes as, earlier today, Mr Maduro was indicted in the Southern District of New York on a slew of drugs and weapons charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy. Reports have claimed he may appear in court as early as on Monday. Mr Maduro and the government in Caracas had previously denied accusations made by the US in the run up to the overnight strike. Explosions rocked Caracas in the early hours of Saturday as the US military carried out its operation, which followed weeks of threats and ramped up military pressure against the Venezuelan leadership. In a press conference held after 4pm GMT today, US President Donald Trump hailed the strike, adding the States will "run Venezuela" for the time being, "until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition".
