You will no longer be able to use or charge your power bank during air travel. In light of the increasing incidents of lithium battery fires in recent times, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a new dangerous goods advisory circular. Under the new rules, using and charging power banks inside the aircraft is now completely prohibited.

Passengers often charged their power banks during long journeys by plugging them into the USB ports or power supply systems provided at their seats. According to the new rules, passengers can only carry power banks in their hand luggage. Furthermore, power banks or lithium batteries will not be allowed in the overhead compartments, as it becomes difficult to detect smoke or fire immediately in those areas.

Pilots' Warning Regarding Checked Baggage
Aviation experts and senior pilots have issued a warning that the biggest risk lies in the aircraft's baggage hold (lower compartment). This is because airlines often take passengers' hand luggage at the boarding gate when the overhead bins are full and place them in the aircraft's cargo area. If these bags contain power banks, detecting and extinguishing a fire in such a situation would be impossible. This could have dangerous consequences. Experts say that airlines should strictly enforce the one-hand-bag-per-passenger rule. This will ensure that there is no compromise on safety.

Why was this strict decision taken?
According to the DGCA, the use of lithium batteries in portable electronic devices (PEDs) has increased significantly. Lithium batteries can overheat and catch fire or explode. Additionally, batteries kept in overhead compartments or checked baggage are not under the constant observation of the crew, leading to delays in detecting smoke or fumes. Major global airlines like Emirates and Singapore Airlines have already implemented similar restrictions.

What are the new guidelines for passengers? If any of your devices (phone, power bank, laptop) emit heat, smoke, or an unusual odor, inform the cabin crew immediately. Airlines will also now be making special announcements on every flight to inform passengers about these rules.
