Makar Sankranti Arghya Method: Makar Sankranti has special significance in Hindu religion. On this day, Sun God leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn, which is considered the beginning of 'Uttarayan'. On this day, there is a tradition of Sun worship along with charity and bathing in holy rivers. According to the calendar, Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 14 in the year 2026. It is believed that offering water to the Sun God on this day increases respect and relieves suffering. But, it is mandatory to follow some rules while offering Arghya.
Bathing in Brahma Muhurta: On the day of Sankranti, take bath before sunrise and wear clean or red colored clothes.
Use of copper pot: Always use a copper vessel to provide water to the Sun. The use of other metals (such as plastic or steel) is prohibited.
Mix these things in water: Fill pure water in the pot and add red flowers, kumkum, akshat (plain rice) and some black sesame seeds in it. Sesame seeds have special significance on Makar Sankranti.
Mudra of offering Arghya: Holding the pot with both hands, take it above your head and slowly release the stream of water.
Focus of vision: While water is falling, your eyes should be on Sun God from the middle of the stream of water. The rays emanating from it are beneficial for health.
Parikrama: After offering Arghya, stand at the same place and revolve three times clockwise.
Water falling on feet: The biggest mistake is that while offering Arghya, water gets sprinkled on the feet. To avoid this, offer water in a pot or a big vessel and later pour it into the plants.
Offering Arghya late: Offering Arghya in the afternoon on Makar Sankranti is not considered beneficial. Try to offer water within an hour of sunrise.
Stay without shoes: Feet should be bare while offering Arghya. It is considered disrespectful to offer water to the Sun God wearing shoes or slippers.
In Hindu religion, Makar Sankranti is not just a festival, but is considered a great festival of sun worship, accumulation of virtue and self-purification. This festival symbolizes the auspicious moment when the Sun God enters Capricorn and Uttarayan occurs. From the religious point of view, it is considered the day of the gods and the beginning of positive energy. Lord Surya visits the house of his son Shani Dev on this day. From astrological point of view, this day symbolizes moving from darkness to light. Donating Khichdi and consuming sesame and jaggery on this day is considered very auspicious.
