In a rare case, a 16-kg giant uterine fibroid was removed from the body of a 30-year-old woman in Faridabad.

The 30-year-old Delhi resident had two spontaneous pregnancy losses in the past two years and reported increasing abdominal heaviness since 2023, with a sudden and significant increase in abdominal size over the last six months.

Following an evaluation at Cloudnine Hospital in Faridabad, ultrasonography revealed a massive fibroid measuring 30 × 26 cm. A subsequent pelvic MRI confirmed a giant subserosal uterine fibroid of approximately 30 × 29.7 cm, consistent with a benign leiomyoma and showing no evidence of malignancy.

Given the fibroid’s enormous size, rapid growth and its association with recurrent pregnancy loss, the medical team planned surgery that required extensive preparation, including the availability of blood products and advanced surgical equipment.

The removed mass weighed 16 kg, making it one of the largest fibroids treated at the centre. The patient was discharged in a stable condition, with her reproductive potential intact.

Speaking on the achievement, Dr Laxmi Goel, Director, Department of Fertility at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, said women often normalise or ignore symptoms such as abdominal heaviness, a gradual increase in abdominal size, or even repeated pregnancy loss, attributing them to stress or routine hormonal changes.

“Unfortunately, conditions such as fibroids can grow silently and reach alarming sizes before being detected. Early consultation and timely imaging can not only prevent complications but also preserve fertility and significantly improve outcomes," she added.
