If you're tired of the icy weather and looking for a winter sun destination where you can thaw off, the ideal place might not be that far away.
Cyprus is just a four-and-a-half hour flight from the UK, and a number of budget airlines fly to the island, meaning it's easy to get a cheap flight in the off-peak winter months. Ryanair have flights from Birmingham to Paphos from just £20 each way in January, or you can fly from London Stansted with flights starting from £22 one way.
Best of all, it has highs of up to 22C in the winter months, a far cry from the current cold spell hanging over the UK. This week, the weather is set to hit 18C and be mild with some clouds, whereas in the UK, we'll see snow, ice, and highs of around 6C during the day.
Cyprus has 300 days of sunshine a year, and is particularly beautiful in early spring when the flowers bloom. The short flight time makes it ideal for short breaks and those travelling with kids, and it has lots of family-friendly hotels.
Those visiting the island for winter sun can enjoy its cultural attractions, historic sites, and hiking trails, and with fewer people on the island, you're less likely to come across big queues or need to share the beautiful views.
One of the island's most famous towns is Ayia Napa, known for its hedonistic party lifestyle during the summer months. In January, it's much quieter, and you won't find the big clubs open, although there are still some local bars opening late. It's a great month to visit if you prefer a quieter, more authentic experience.
Troodos Mountains is a great place to visit in the winter when it's quiet. Visitors can hike and enjoy the idyllic scenery, or visit the quaint village and a monastery nestled in the mountain range. Between January and March, there's even a ski resort open for those who want to hit the slopes. You can drive right up to the pistes and enjoy spectacular views along the way.
While you're in the mountains, try the local fortified sweet wine called commandaria. Many locals sell bottles of it from their doorsteps for a few Euros.
The capital of Nicosia is another must-visit. This city was divided in 1974. With the south internationally recognised as the Republic of Cyprus, while the north is controlled by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognised by Turkey. Running through the city is the 'green line' making it the only divided capital city in the world.
Tourists can generally cross the green line without issue, although some rental cars can't be taken to the north. If you buy any goods during your trip over the border, bear in mind that they may be subject to customs restrictions,
January is also the perfect time to visit some of Cyprus's biggest attractions, as the crowds will be much smaller. Visit Aphrodite's Rock or the Tombs of the Kings, see a turtle conservation station, or take a day trip to Akamas Peninsula National Park on the west coast known for its golden sandy bays.
