New Delhi: Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been heavily linked with a return to the club as the caretaker manager after the sacking of Ruben Amorim. United sacked manager Amorim on Monday, marking an end to his 14-month spell at the club. The Red Devils are reportedly planning to appoint a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season before making a permanent managerial appointment later in the summer.

While former United midfielder Fletcher, who has been at the club for a while now and worked with youth teams, is set to take charge of United’s next couple of matches, the club’s search for a caretaker manager is on. The caretaker manager will be in charge for the remainder of the 2025-26 season before a permanent manager is hired.

Several former United players, including Solskjaer, have been linked with the caretaker manager position. As per a report in the BBC, United have held preliminary talks with Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Fletcher about becoming the caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.

Solskjaer first returned to United as an interim manager in 2018, replacing Jose Mourinho, who the club sacked. He went on to impress in his stint as the caretaker manager and was later appointed permanently. Solskjaer was sacked by the club in 2021 and later replaced by Erik Ten Hag as the full-time manager.

Solskjaer enjoyed a brief stint at Turkish club Besiktas, where he got off to a strong start but was sacked in August last year after the club failed to qualify for the Europa Conference League qualifiers. He is currently out of work and was recently spotted in Cheshire, Greater Manchester, amid rumours of his return to Manchester United.

Meanwhile, Carrick is also out of work since leaving his role as the head coach of Middlesbrough in June last year. Carrick was part of United’s coaching staff under Ole and was appointed as the caretaker boss before leaving the club.

Ruud van Nistelrooy also a contender

Manchester United are also reportedly considering former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy for the interim manager position after Amorim’s departure. Nistelrooy was appointed United’s caretaker boss after Erik Ten Hag’s departure in 2024 and led the team to three victories and a draw in four matches.

He later served briefly as the manager of Leicester City before getting sacked following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
