Finnish eyewear company IXI has introduced a new smart glasses that automatically change focus according to what your eyes need. These glasses look normal, but they include advanced features like eye-tracking sensors and liquid crystal lenses. This technology goes beyond the traditional bifocal and varifocal lenses and gives rise to a new thinking.
Bifocal lenses, which were developed by Benjamin Franklin in the 1700s, split into two halves for seeing far and near. Varifocal lenses, introduced in the 1960s, provide smoother transitions, but they also come with limitations, such as cost and vision distortion at the edges. IXI’s new autofocus glasses offer a solution to all these problems.
IXI’s smart glasses have no fixed magnification area. The lenses automatically adjust to your eye movements, so you don’t need any special parts to see near and far.
These glasses have a wide “reading area” for seeing nearby objects, which is determined based on an eye examination. The special thing is that when it is not needed, this area disappears and the entire lens works for distance vision.
Despite having electronics and batteries, these glasses weigh only 22 grams, which makes them comparable to normal glasses. These also look like ordinary glasses in appearance. For charging, they have a magnetic port, which is hidden in the temple of the frame.
If any malfunction occurs in the electronic system or liquid crystal, these glasses immediately go into basic mode. This means that the user has normal distance vision without any visual disturbance. The company claims that this technology is completely reliable in everyday life.
There are no specific performance benchmarks available with this smart glasses, but it provides a better focusing experience than traditional technologies.
