Preparations for Christmas celebration are in full swing across the world. Lights and decorations are visible everywhere from churches to homes, but amidst all these preparations, there is one thing which is considered to be the biggest symbol of Christmas, the Christmas tree. Every year on December 25, millions of Christians around the world decorate this tree in their homes, but do you know that there is no direct mention of the Christmas tree in the Bible?
Then the question arises that why did this tree come to be considered so sacred? Where did it start? In fact, the history of the Christmas tree is many centuries older than Christianity. The Pagan civilizations of ancient Europe considered trees that remained green even in the harsh winters to be a symbol of life, hope, and protection from evil. This tradition was later incorporated into Christian culture and gradually the tree became a sign of Christ’s ‘eternal life’.
Today’s Christmas tree tradition is believed to have originated in 16th–17th century Germany. Around the same time, the practice of bringing evergreen fir/pine bushes into the house during the winter season began in German families.
Before then, in European regions, especially Pagan societies, there was always a tradition of decorating homes and temples with green leaves during the winter solstice, i.e. the longest dark time. It was believed that it was a symbol of life, resurrection and protection from evil spirits/evil forces. Later, when Christianity spread, the tradition of decorating this tree gradually took on new religious forms and became associated with Christmas.
