If you are a State Bank of India (SBI) debit card holder and frequently use ATMs of other banks, this update is important for you. SBI has revised its ATM transaction charges, and the changes directly impact customers once their free monthly transaction limit is exhausted. The revised charges have already come into effect and may increase your monthly banking costs if you rely heavily on non-SBI ATMs.
SBI has modified the fee structure applicable to ATM transactions carried out at other banks’ ATMs. The new charges apply after customers exhaust their free monthly ATM transaction limit. Once the free quota is used, customers will now have to pay higher charges for both cash withdrawals and non-financial transactions such as balance enquiry and mini statements.
These changes are aimed at rationalising ATM usage and encouraging customers to rely more on SBI’s own ATM network and digital banking channels.
The revised ATM charges mainly affect:
Savings account holders
Salary account holders
Current account holders
However, SBI has provided relief to certain categories. Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts and Kisan Credit Card (KCC) holders are exempt from these revised charges, meaning they will not be impacted by the new fee structure.
For customers holding a SBI savings account, the free ATM transaction limit remains unchanged. They are entitled to five free transactions per month at other banks’ ATMs. These free transactions include both financial and non-financial activities.
Once the monthly free limit is exhausted:
Cash withdrawal will attract a charge of ₹23 + GST
Non-financial transactions (such as balance check or mini statement) will cost ₹11 + GST
This means that frequent ATM users may notice a higher deduction from their account if they go beyond the free usage limit.
The biggest change has been introduced for salary account holders. Earlier, SBI salary account customers enjoyed unlimited free ATM transactions at other banks’ ATMs. This facility has now been withdrawn.
Under the new rules:
Salary account holders will get only 10 free ATM transactions per month
This limit applies to transactions carried out at other banks’ ATMs
Once the free limit is crossed, the same charges as savings accounts will apply:
₹23 + GST for cash withdrawals
₹11 + GST for non-financial transactions
This change makes it especially important for salaried individuals to monitor their ATM usage carefully.
For current account holders, there is no change in policy. SBI did not offer free ATM transactions on other banks’ ATMs earlier, and that continues to remain the case. Every transaction will continue to attract the applicable charges as per existing norms.
All the revised ATM transaction charges came into force from December 1, 2025. Since then, using other banks’ ATMs beyond the free limit has become more expensive for SBI customers.
With ATM withdrawals becoming costlier, customers are advised to:
Track their monthly free ATM transaction limit
Prefer SBI ATMs over other banks’ ATMs whenever possible
Use digital banking options like UPI, mobile banking, and internet banking for routine transactions
Limit non-essential ATM visits, especially for balance enquiries, which can be easily checked via mobile apps
Salary account holders, in particular, should be extra cautious, as the removal of unlimited free transactions could significantly increase costs if ATM usage is not monitored.
SBI’s revised ATM transaction charges mean higher costs for customers who frequently use non-SBI ATMs, especially after crossing the free transaction limit. While the bank continues to offer free transactions within limits, exceeding them will now attract higher charges. Planning ATM usage wisely and shifting to digital payment methods can help customers avoid unnecessary fees and manage their banking expenses more efficiently.
