Bangladesh used to provide on-arrival visa services to citizens of nearby nations like Bhutan and Nepal. However, the governments of those nations have now been formally informed of the intention to halt that agreement.

According to a senior government official, Bangladesh will halt the issuing of on-arrival visas for a month between January 15 and February 15. This is applicable to all nations that typically obtain visa services from Bangladesh upon arrival.

It is generally believed that he made this choice with the impending national legislative elections in mind, even if he did not specifically declare why.

The government is probably taking this action to improve security in border regions and stop any possible unrest during the election season, since the campaign will start on January 22 and prominent party leaders will travel around the nation to conduct rallies. It has been claimed that similar actions have been conducted during previous elections.

Furthermore, Bangladesh has stopped issuing visas via its main offices in India. According to officials, there is no chance that these visa services would be resumed until after the election. On February 12, Bangladesh is set to hold both national parliamentary elections and a popular referendum on specific reforms.

Bangladesh has stepped up its internal security measures in the run-up to the referendum and general election.

Army soldiers are erecting security checkpoints at different sites, and the military has been deployed around the nation. The military has already been given magisterial powers by the temporary administration. Along with the army, the police have also been told to use utmost caution in the performance of their jobs.
