TRIBUNLOMBOK.COM - There's no shortage of reasons to fall in love with Lombok. Beyond its enchanting beaches and towering Mount Rinjani, the island holds tranquil corners where nature speaks softly.

One such place is Sendang Gile Waterfall, a hidden place in the middle of the dense forest of North Lombok.

Located in Senaru Village, Bayan District, Sendang Gile is situated at the foot of Mount Rinjani. The journey from Mataram City takes approximately three hours by road, or approximately 110 kilometers, with beautiful views along the way.

Senaru is also known as the main starting point for Rinjani hikes, which makes this waterfall a favorite stop for trekkers looking to unwind either before the climb or after the adventure ends.

Reaching the waterfall is part of the experience. From the parking area, a 15 to 20 minute walk leads you through forest paths and stone steps shaded by tall trees.

Along the way, you'll encounter the famous "1,000 Steps." The cool mountain air and the sounds of nature make the journey feel light and relaxing.

Hundreds of years old traditional houses still stand in Senaru Village, North Lombok. This photo was taken on Thursday, November 4, 2021.

Sitting about 486 meters above sea level, Sendang Gile drops nearly 30 meters, sending down a steady curtain of water that fills the air with a soothing roar.

The waterfall carries more than just flowing water, it carries stories. Local legends tell of a wild lion that once roamed the area and terrified villagers.

While trying to chase it away, they stumbled upon a hidden waterfall deep in the forest. From that moment on, the place was called Sendang Gile, often interpreted as a spring discovered through the chaos of a “crazy lion.” The tale lives on, adding a touch of mystery to the natural beauty.

Visually, Sendang Gile is simply enchanting. Water glides down dark rock walls like a soft, flowing veil. Fed by Mount Rinjani’s natural springs, the water is clear, icy cold, and incredibly refreshing.

Visitors often linger splashing their faces, soaking their feet, or standing beneath the falling water to let nature do its quiet magic.

Surrounding the waterfall is a dense tropical landscape, alive with greenery and birdsong. The gentle rhythm of water and wildlife creates a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from busy city life. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and stay a little longer.

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, Tiu Kelep Waterfall in this forested area is an option.

The journey there takes another 30 to 45 minutes, with a more challenging route that includes river crossings and slippery rocks. However, the rewards are well worth it. Tiu Kelep Waterfall welcomes visitors with a more exotic view.
