Liquid Metal: What is liquid metal? Why will this super material be used in the Apple iPhone Fold?

According to well-known tipster yeux1122 on the Korean platform Naver, Apple may use liquid metal in the hinge mechanism of the iPhone Fold. The main frame of the foldable phone is also expected to be made of titanium. Apple could launch its first foldable iPhone at the end of the year or in 2026. This device may come with a book-style folding design, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series. However, as always, Apple is preparing to do something different in terms of design and engineering.

What is Liquid Metal?
Liquidmetal, often referred to simply as liquid metal, is an amorphous metal alloy developed by a research team at the California Institute of Technology. An amorphous metal differs from metals like stainless steel because it lacks a crystalline structure. This gives Liquidmetal greater strength, resistance to permanent deformation, and excellent durability under repeated mechanical stress. It provides high strength despite being lightweight. This is why it is considered perfect for the hinge of a foldable device.

Why does Apple want to use Liquid Metal?
The hinge is considered the weakest part of a foldable smartphone. Traditional stainless steel hinges are strong, but they increase the weight and thickness of the device. In contrast, Liquidmetal is lightweight and allows for thin and strong castings. According to leaks, Apple is working on an ultra-slim iPhone Fold, which could be around 5.6mm thick or even less when unfolded. A Liquidmetal hinge could play a crucial role in achieving such a thin design.

First large-scale use of Liquid Metal
It's worth noting that Apple's relationship with Liquidmetal is not new. The company struck a deal with Liquidmetal Technologies in 2010, granting it an exclusive and permanent license to use amorphous metal in consumer electronics. However, so far, Apple has limited the use of this material to small parts such as the SIM ejector tool. Using it in larger components has proven technically challenging. The iPhone Fold could be the first device where Apple adopts it on a larger scale.

What has been revealed so far?
Several leaks regarding the iPhone Fold have surfaced. According to this information, the iPhone Fold will feature a 5.5-inch external display, a 7.8-inch internal foldable OLED screen, a high refresh rate on both displays, a side-mounted Touch ID instead of Face ID, a new and unannounced A20 Pro chipset, and a total of four cameras (two selfie cameras + dual rear camera setup). It is also believed that the A20 Pro chip will be even more powerful than the A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro.

According to reports, Apple may launch its first foldable iPhone in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Regarding the price, the iPhone Fold is unlikely to be cheap. According to leaks, its price in the US could be around $2400, which would be approximately ₹2.15 lakh in India.
